The HearWell Health guide

Hearing aids in Ireland, explained

Choosing a hearing aid is a big decision, and most people make it with very little help. The audiologists behind HearWell Health have put everything you need to know in one place, in plain English.

Signs of hearing loss

Signs you may need a hearing test

Hearing loss creeps up so slowly that the people around you often notice it first. If two or more of these sound familiar, it is time to have your hearing checked by a qualified audiologist.

  • You often ask people to repeat themselves
  • Conversations in restaurants or at family gatherings are hard to follow
  • Others say the TV or radio is too loud
  • Voices sound mumbled, especially women's and children's voices
  • Phone calls have become difficult
  • You hear ringing, buzzing or humming in your ears
  • You feel worn out after a day of listening and talking
  • You have started avoiding busy places or social occasions
The signs nobody mentions

Signs most hearing tests never ask about

Your hearing is connected to far more than your ears. These signs might surprise you, and they are exactly what HearWell Health looks for.

The birdsong has gone quiet

High sounds like birdsong, a kettle or a ringing phone are often the first to fade. Most hearing tests stop at 8,000 Hz. Ours goes higher.

Fine in quiet, lost in company

A standard hearing test can come back "normal" and still miss this. We test how well you follow real speech with chatter all around you.

You feel unsteady on your feet

Your ears play a big part in your balance, and research links hearing loss with a higher risk of falls.

Your memory feels less sharp

Straining to hear takes brainpower that would otherwise go into following and remembering a conversation.

You are sleeping badly

Ringing in the ears and the effort of a long day's listening can both get in the way of a good night's sleep.

You feel flat after a busy day

Missing parts of the conversation can leave you tired, low or on the edge of things, even among people you love.

Sound familiar? These are just some of the things a HearWell Health assessment looks at. The rest we will reveal in January.

Types of hearing aids

Smaller, smarter and more comfortable than ever

Today's hearing aids are tiny computers that adapt to the world around you. Your audiologist will recommend a style based on your hearing test, the shape of your ear, your lifestyle and what matters most to you.

One ear or both?

Most people with hearing loss in both ears hear best with two hearing aids. Your brain uses both ears to tell where sound is coming from and to pick out voices in noise.

Which is right for me?

There is no single best hearing aid, only the best one for your ears and your life. That is a decision to make with an audiologist, not a sales assistant.

Hearing aid prices

How much do hearing aids cost in Ireland?

Prices vary more than almost anything else in healthcare. Basic hearing aids can be covered by the PRSI grant, while a pair of premium hearing aids from a traditional clinic can cost €6,000 or more. The price on the ticket rarely tells the whole story.

Seven questions to ask any clinic before you buy

  1. Which technology level is this, and what would the next level up do for me?
  2. How many follow-up appointments are included, and for how long?
  3. What happens, and what will it cost, when my hearing changes?
  4. Are domes, filters, servicing and repairs included?
  5. What does the warranty cover if a hearing aid is lost or damaged?
  6. Will my hearing aids be checked with Real Ear Measurement at the fitting?
  7. What will it cost to replace them in four or five years?
Already wear hearing aids?

You paid thousands. Did the care stop at the till?

You know the feeling. Appointments that cost extra. Adjustments that never quite land. A hearing aid that is three years old with nobody checking in. Hearing aids are only as good as the care behind them, and too often that care ends the day you pay.

  • A full HearWell Health assessment, even if you bought your hearing aids somewhere else
  • Unlimited follow-ups, adjustments and fine‑tuning, for as long as you are with us
  • Every fitting checked with Real Ear Measurement, not set to an average
  • An audiologist who takes a personal interest in you, from testing and fitting right through to long-term aftercare
Treatment Benefit

The PRSI hearing aid grant

If you have paid enough PRSI, the Department of Social Protection's Treatment Benefit scheme helps with the cost of hearing aids. Many people do not realise they are entitled to it.

€500per hearing aidThat is up to €1,000 towards a pair.
4 yearsbetween claimsYou can claim again once every four calendar years.
€100towards repairsPer hearing aid, once in each four-year period.

Who qualifies?

People who have paid enough PRSI contributions, including many employees, self-employed people and retired people. A dependent husband, wife or partner may also qualify through your contributions.

How do I claim?

You do not need to fill in forms. An approved hearing clinic checks your entitlement with your PPS number and claims the grant for you, so it comes straight off the cost.

Have a medical card?

You may be able to get hearing aids through the HSE instead. Ask your GP about a referral to the HSE audiology service.

The rules are set by the Department of Social Protection and can change. Check the latest at citizensinformation.ie.

Hearing and healthy ageing

Untreated hearing loss is never just about your ears

Your brain, not your ear, does the listening. When sound stops reaching it clearly, the effects reach far beyond conversation.

Brain health

The 2024 Lancet Commission on dementia named hearing loss as one of fourteen risk factors that can potentially be changed, and one of the largest.

Connection

Struggling to follow conversation leads many people to step back from friends and family. Hearing well keeps you in the conversation, and in the life you enjoy.

Balance and confidence

Research has linked hearing loss with a higher risk of falls. Your ears play a big part in your balance and in your sense of the world around you.

That is why HearWell Health looks at the whole person, not just a hearing chart. A new kind of hearing assessment is coming to Ireland.

See what our assessment covers
Your hearing assessment

Most hearing tests check your ears. Ours checks how you are living.

A standard hearing test asks one question: can you hear this beep? A HearWell Health assessment asks how well you hear, how well you listen in real life, and how healthily you are ageing. It takes up to 90 minutes, it is never rushed, and it is never a sales pitch.

"A standard hearing test" describes a basic hearing check. What is included varies from clinic to clinic, so always ask what yours will cover.

Every fitting verified with Real Ear Measurement. A tiny microphone in your ear canal measures exactly what your hearing aids deliver, so they are set for your ears, not an average. It is the gold standard of hearing aid fitting, and at HearWell Health it is standard for every patient.

Your questions

Hearing aid questions, answered

How do I know if I need a hearing aid?
The only way to know for sure is a hearing test with a qualified audiologist. Common signs include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling in noisy places, turning the TV up and finding phone calls difficult. If any of these sound familiar, book a hearing test.
How much do hearing aids cost in Ireland?
Basic hearing aids can be covered by the PRSI grant of up to €1,000 a pair. Premium hearing aids from a traditional clinic can cost €6,000 or more a pair. Always ask what aftercare, follow-up appointments and repairs are included, because that is where the real value lies.
Am I entitled to the PRSI hearing aid grant?
If you have paid enough PRSI contributions, the Treatment Benefit scheme pays up to €500 per hearing aid, up to €1,000 a pair, once every four years, plus up to €100 towards repairs. Many employees, self-employed people and retired people qualify. An approved hearing clinic can check your entitlement with your PPS number.
What does a HearWell Health hearing assessment include?
Far more than a standard hearing test. As well as the usual hearing test, your audiologist examines your ears on screen, checks your middle ear, tests the high frequencies up to 12,500 Hz, measures how well you follow speech in background noise, assesses tinnitus, checks your balance and risk of falls, and looks at your memory, attention, mood, sleep and how your hearing is affecting your social life. It takes up to 90 minutes and is never a sales pitch.
Do I need a GP referral for a hearing test?
No. You can book a hearing test directly with a private audiologist. If you would like your GP to see your results, your audiologist can send them a written report.
How long does it take to get used to hearing aids?
Most people feel the benefit straight away, but it usually takes a few weeks to a few months for your brain to fully adjust to hearing sounds it has been missing. Regular follow-ups and fine-tuning with your audiologist make a big difference during that time.
Will people be able to see my hearing aids?
Modern hearing aids are very discreet. Receiver-in-canal styles sit neatly behind the ear with an almost invisible wire, and some custom styles sit so deep in the ear canal that nobody can see them.
Can hearing aids help with tinnitus?
For many people, yes. Hearing aids can make tinnitus less noticeable by bringing back the everyday sounds that mask it, and many include gentle sound therapy. An audiologist can assess your tinnitus and recommend a plan.
When and where is HearWell Health opening?
HearWell Health opens its first clinics, in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, in January 2027, and will then expand quickly with clinics in towns across Ireland. Leave your email below and we will tell you the moment our doors open.
Things worth hearing

A few facts we love, and a few hints about what is coming

Your ears never switch off.

Even while you sleep, they are listening. Which is more than can be said for some hearing clinics after the sale.

Hearing well is brain work.

Your brain, not your ear, does the listening. That is why HearWell Health audiologists guide you through the first months like a partner, not a shop assistant.

Hearing care should serve the patient, not the sale.

HearWell Health is Irish, founded by a team with decades of audiology experience, and built on that one belief. In January 2027, you will see exactly what it means.
